TERRA DI SIENA
Medieval Tresures, Renaissance Gardens and Contemporary Art Installations between Siena and Volterra
For the first time after 900 years you can look at the magnificent star-studded ceilings and gilded statues of Siena Cathedral from a unique prospective: a suspended walkway near the top of the 16-metre high nave via a spiral stone staircase. Enjoy the aerial view of the Medieval and Renaissance mosaics that cover the marble floor, as well as get closer to its ornate vaulted ceiling. The thirteenth-century Gothic cathedral is a treasure trove of art, and home to works by Donatello, Bernini and the young Michelangelo.
In the surrounding countryside we are welcomed in a private villa for a special wine tastings in its dazzling XVI century “Giardino all’Italiana”. This was the set of “Stealing Beauty” by Bernardo Bertolucci, in which Liv Tyler debuted.
Very close to the grandiose San Galgano Abbey, an eccentric Bavarian artist “cultivates” massive sculptures meticulously fashioned to interact with the wind, moving or vibrating to produce soft unearthly music.
Why not going to Volterra to see the most beautiful Archological museum of Tuscany? You may also visit the typical alabaster laboratories, watching the masters’skills in producing hadcrafts and ornamental objects and laboratories and admire the endless hillsides embracing giant site specific sculptures by the Italian artist Mauro Staccioli.
